Your SIM card might not seem particularly exciting. It’s the key to connecting to our network though, so it’s an important piece of kit when it comes to getting the most out of your phone, tablet or modem.

Mobile devices are small, so space is at a premium and every millimetre counts. This has lead to the introduction of smaller SIMs in recent years, and there are three currently available:

 SIM - Full Size  SIM - Micro  SIM - Nano
The full size SIM  The micro SIM  The nano SIM

Having a range of SIMs can be confusing, but we’ll make sure the right SIM is supplied when you get a new device from us.  If you’re buying a device from elsewhere, just make sure you’re using the right SIM with it.

Why is this important?

Your device is designed to take one particular type of SIM card.  Using a different sized SIM can cause damage, for example here’s a basically brand new Pocket WiFi Extreme. A pretty sleek device when it’s running, but this one’s broken:

Example of damage caused by SIM

It might be a bit hard to tell, but what you’re looking at are bent contacts and a warped slot. Put simply, it won’t work. All of our Pocket WiFi and USB modems take a full size SIM, but a Micro SIM was tried in this one (actually it’s still in there somewhere). A simple mistake to make, but also an easy one to avoid, so…

The best advice is to check first

Make sure you’re about to use the correct sized SIM in your new device. If you’re not sure:

  • Check your user guide
  • Check the list on our support page, or;
  • If you’re still not sure, check with us to confirm

If you do happen to try the wrong sized SIM, don’t try to remove it. You might do more damage. Bring it to us, and we’ll arrange for it to be assessed by our service centre. It’ll mean you’ll be without it for a while and it’s not likely to be covered under warranty, so checking first is obviously the preferable option.

What about SIM adaptors?

We don’t recommend them because they too have the potential to do damage. You can find out more on our support page.

We don’t recommend cutting your SIM down to size either.  If you do need a different sized SIM at any stage, that’s no drama. Just pop in store or get in touch and we’ll organise a swap for you at no charge.
